Note: In Windows 2000 and XP, the Application Data folder is likely to be hidden. In the Explorer window, go to Tools>Folder Options. If this folder is hidden in Windows 98 or ME, choose View>Folder Options. Switch to the tab labeled View. Place a mark at “Show hidden files and folders.” Click Apply, then OK to close the dialogue box.
To use the template, Open Word. Open the File menu and choose New. This will open the New dialogue box. In Word XP, the New Document task pane will open where you will need to choose “General Templates.” In the New dialogue box, select the template name that you would like to use. Click OK. A DOCUMENT will open BASED on the information in the template file. You can make changes to this document—they will not affect the standard text of the template file.
To modify the standard text contained within the template, open the Template folder and then select template name. Right-click and choose Open. It is important that you right-click and choose Open, otherwise, you will open a document based on the template.
Make any necessary changes to the standard text or margins. Click Save and close the template file.
Some templates have specific instructions. To print these instructions, open the template file as described in the paragraph above. Press CTRL+N (to open a new document). Type the word “Instructions” (no quotation marks) and press Enter. Name and save the instruction file, print if desired. Close the template file.
To see “jumps” (blank fields), press ALT+F9. The fields will be a set of brackets. Delete any blank fields that are not needed, or add additional ones using CTRL+F9. Toggle ALT+F9 again to “hide” the blank fields.
For all templates, press F11 to jump from one blank field to the next throughout the template.
